Finding Products To Sell Online

What Products Can You Sell?

In my previous blog, I mentioned 7 essentials to starting and running a business. The first and most important of these is having a product to sell.

So in this blog I want to talk a bit about this, and see if I can help you to decide what kind of business you will have.

Here are some of the main categories you will need to consider when it comes to finding a product to sell. Each of them involves a different way of doing business, and often a different level of profit. Some require you to have capital to lay out before you even think about starting a business. Others will allow you to get started right away.

A. You can make your own product, or sell someone else's product

B. You could sell products to end users, or you could sell them to someone who will resell them - dealers or associates.

C. You could sell from a live physical location, or you could sell on the internet.

In my full Basic Business Course, I include detailed information on how to go about finding, creating and selling products. This will be available soon for those who wish to buy it. But here I would like to give you some free advance teaching on the subject.

Before I went into full time ministry, I had a business of my own, which provided our basic needs. But once I went into ministry, this changed. I shared my story of how I began a business selling ministry resource products. But before that I was in a different kind of business.

My work skills were centered in the computer industry, and for many years I worked as a computer programmer and support consultant for a company that sold computer hardware and software. Once I had gained experience in this field, I moved out on my own and started my own computer business.

So I had a bit of experience in selling the following kind of products:

1. Computer Hardware.

2. Computer Software

3. My Time  - as a Consultant and Computer Programmer

In each of these areas I could either resell what someone else had made, or make my own and sell it. And I learned to do this in all fields:

1. I put together computers myself, by buying the basic parts, assembling them and delivering them to customers.

2. I installed prewritten software, which I bought and resold at a profit.

3. I wrote my own software, which I sold and resold over again.

4. I sold my time as both a consultant and a specialist programmer, developing unique software for clients.

In the end I found that I could make more money by selling my time and my personal skills, than I could by reselling products made by someone else. The reason for this was that there was always stiff competition, and I had to compete with other businesses by lowering my prices. That meant low profits.

When I sold my time, skills and knowledge, I could offer a client something that others could not - my own uniqueness, and their own uniqueness. People were prepared to pay for this and there was really no competition in the field.

Ministry Products

When I began to sell ministry resources on the internet, I faced a different kind of product, but actually some of the same principles as my previous business.

1. I could have bought other peoples materials and resold them. This would have meant I would need capital to invest in stock, and once again, I would be competing with others who were selling the same products.

2. I could have tried to sell my services and time. But in this realm, the idea of charging for ministry was totally unacceptable, and went against all status quo thinking. Nobody was prepared to pay for my time and effort in ministering to them.

3. I could produce my own materials and sell them in the form of books, e-books, CD's, DVD's and online study courses.

Experience showed that the only way I could receive money for any form of ministry, was to capture that ministry on video, audio or in books, and then sell those products as a business. While I tried to offer ministry freely and ask for donations, I was starving. When I produced good products and offered them for sale, people were happy to buy them.

Now not everyone has the ability to produce their own products, so if you are wondering how you will ever get going with this kind of business, do not worry. It is very easy today to sell someone else's e-books and online products without laying out any cash in advance.

You simply find a customer for someone who makes these products, and they will give you a percentage of the sale as a commission. We call such a person an Associate. It is something I personally have never needed to do, since I could produce my own products. However, I do plan to make my own products available in the near future to those who wish to sell them and earn a commission as part of their own business.

Here Is What I Will Offer You Soon

It is my intention to help all those who would really like to get going in their own business, including earning money to support their ministry. And under this section of the Basic Business Course, I will be offering the following lessons:

1. How you can write and produce good materials that you can sell online.

2. How you can capture your preaching and teaching on video, to produce quality teaching that you can sell.

3. How you can create CD's, DVD's, and audio/video files that you can upload to the internet.

4. How you can transcribe your preaching and teaching and make them into a resource that you can publish, as an e-book, printed book or both.

5. How you can format, edit and convert your writing into a quality e-book that you can sell.

6. How you can format, edit and print out your writing in a form that can be bound together into a book.

7. How to design and print your own book covers.

8. How you can bind your own books, using equipment that you can operate from home.

9. How you can sell your materials online and receive payments from around the world.

Much of what you need to do will not need you to lay out any cash to start with. It costs you nothing but time to preach, teach, write and publish on the internet. But you will have to lay out some money if you want to do this as a business.

a. You will need space on a web server somewhere to produce web pages that promote and sell your products.

b. You will need some basic software to produce the products that you upload.

c. If you wish to make printed books, you will need some basic hardware to produce these.

d. If you wish to learn using my Basic Business Course, you will need to buy the complete course at the price which I will set for it.

I will help you all I can by pointing you to free resources and software that are available online. But if you really want your business to move ahead, then you must be prepared to do things well, and this will cost you, both in time, effort and money.

That is all I will be saying now on Products. Next time we will look a bit at how to find a market for the products that you will sell. If you have any questions or comments, please post them in the response form below.

Response from Patty Jaynes : I like what you are instructing on starting your own ministry business. I have written 20 Christian books. I do my own transcriptions, editing, proof reading, and publishing. I also do my own jacket covers. All of them are in 8X10" format.

I also have my own equipment and have video taped numerous videos and recorded numerous audio tapes from my own teachings.

What I need to know is what software I need to be able to publish my video teachings to the internet and how to create ebooks from my books I've written.

How do I get the public to come to my website? I have a website at www.omubiblecollege.org but I hardly ever get any hits on it. I have never sold any of my products. The only time I've ever sold my products was on ebay but they want too much for their fees, etc.

I really am desperate to earn finances for my ministry because when I go out to speak and minister I oftentimes receive no offerings. The pastors who invite me don't take up an offering for my ministry. I believe this is contrary to what the word of God teaches but who am I to confront the pastors about this.

Thanks for all your help.

Patty
Reply From Bill Yinaire: It is clear that you must be doing something wrong if you are failing to succeed in both online and offline ministry.

Could it be that your ministry is too self-oriented and you are not presenting the love of the Lord to people? I also see that you offer nothing freely on your website. Why would anyone want to buy your materials if they do not even know what you are teaching?

From your photograph you look like a hard unloving person, and your home page talks only about yourself. This for a start is bad marketing practice. Your layout and colors are not attractive, and the text is too small. I personally did not want to spend much time browsing your pages.

You may have great knowledge and might be able to help people in their problems. But nobody wants to have demons cast out of them, and the whole deliverance concept produces little more than fear and demonic manifestations. I have taught clearly on this subject, and you would do well to read some of our materials.

To put it bluntly my sister, you are not selling a product that anybody wants, so nobody will buy. You are also selling it really badly, so nobody will ever buy from you.

The business side I can help you with. The ministry side, I have already taught enough on, but if you are not ready to start again and learn how to minister effectively to people in tender love, and let the love of Jesus shine out of you, I doubt your ministry will ever succeed.

Response from Lora Johnson-Posey : Good Morning Mr Bill,

I read your post on what products can you sell and I must amit that I have being sitting on promoting my book and not doing things to get it out there. Lately, several people have came to me and said that they had read my book and how it ministered to them. I say that I will start to promote it but never get around to doing it. How do I go about getting started online since I do not have the money to do anything else? I also read the ebook on the signs of a business calling and I know that God has called me in that area. After reading the ebook, my spirit was stirred to get moving; this is why I'm posting this post. God said get moving now that you know that you know that I have called you for this hour in business.

I need help in getting started!

Thanks!

Lora
Reply From Bill Yinaire: There are many in the same position as you. That is why I am putting together this course, to show folks how to go about it.

I will be covering each different aspect in future blogs and in detail in the final course.

Response from jACKSON MWASANGA : Dear Bill Yinaire,
Thanks very much for the many advise that you give and the inspirations that I get from your messages from the word of God.
Iam in the business of gemstones, and I have found it really hard to get the market for them, and alot of money and time has been invested in this business.Because of none selling of the products,I have found myself in a deep dungeon of debts.Iam literally at my wits end and Iam really frustrated.
Can you please help me.
Reply From Bill Yinaire: Your situation comes under the next topic that I mentioned in the Seven Basic Essentials of running a business. It is something that many business owners miss out. They think that because they have a valuable product, or they have something that they are excited about, that there has to be many others who will want to buy it.

But without a market to sell to, your product is useless. Did you first test this market before pouring all your money into it? Or were you so excited at the profit you could make that you just jumped in and hoped it would take off?

I have made this same mistake many times myself, so I understand the problem you are facing. You are now stuck with stock items of a product that you cannot sell.

I know little about your business or the market you are working in, and there could be many different ways of marketing that could help break you free, but there is only one way of marketing that can really get things moving.

1. If you are stuck with stock that will not sell, then drop your prices and get whatever you can for it. Money in your pocket is far more use to you than dead stock.

2. If you have to give away some materials for cost, or even less, it could arouse some interest and produce future customers. Consider the cost as advertising expenses.

3. Try blessing someone with some of your products by giving it to them as a free gift. If you do this in a spirit of love, it could be considered an investment in the heavenly realm, and you could reap a reward from the Lord.

But above all, consider setting this product aside for now and look to selling something that does have a market. Then later, when there is a demand for your current product you can build the business slowly, making it an extra source of income.

Response from Daniel A.M.Ghansah : I think the suggestion that you giving is loudable of one creating your own wealth to be able to support the ministry.Am interested in producing my own book and edit it as well.Am coming out with a book.Hoping learn more ideas from you.

Response from Harriet : This is my first time looking into your new program and I am impressed. I believe in your work, your teachings, I would love to be apart of this new work for entrep. One can feel the anointing in your writings. My time has been the issue. I have order and reordered in the past. May God bless you and and your inspired work. I have some material in writing but probably not enough to produce a book as yet but since looking into this new ministry work I am feeling like I need to start re arranging my focus. Thank you for sharing. God bless,

Response from Deborah Simmons : The Lord has been speaking about a change for my new year.
It caught me stunned and in awe as he forcasted the problems of the future state of our country.
A pathway because of the future of the World System coming quickly.I own and operate my own Hair Salon and the Lord yesterday spoke to sell and move on! Wow, was I taken back.

Years ago he placed within my hands a business product idea that i have put on the shelf. As reading your prophet word for 2010 he spoke again that he has plans to prosper me and then brought back to rememberance the product that has been on the shelf to benefit the body of christ.

This word is a word fitly spoken to validate and confirm my future. Our church has been speaking on the same message as well as other brothers team working on patents and inventions.

Thank you,
Love in Jc
Deborah Simmons

Response from Tricia : You have inspired me and in so doing my spirit has be activated to put more effort into the selling of my book which was published 3 years ago but has not received many hits. I have given away lots of copies as gifts and I have also dropped the price by 35%.

I am stuck as to what else to do to push the sales.
Please advise me.
Thank you.

Tricia.
Reply From Bill Yinaire: Before I buy a book on Amazon.com I read all the reviews from customers to see what others think of the book. These will often determine whether I should buy the book or not. I am seldom moved by the price, unless I already want the book and it is going on a special price. But if I really want something, I will gladly pay a higher price to get it.

Do you have any reviews on the books you have given away? Does anyone think your book is great, to recommend it to others?

If not, then perhaps you should go back to the drawing board and think about selling something that people really want, and let your book die a natural death.

I know this is like killing your baby, but perhaps it might be the thing to do if you wish to get ahead in business.

Failing that, you obviously need to learn a few things about marketing and selling. I am going to be launching the full business school soon, which will cover all these subjects.
